Personal Statement

My collegiate aspirations are similar to my goals when entering high school.  Initially in high school, I wanted to prove myself academically while taking rigorous and challenging courses.  Athletically, as a freshman I loved the camaraderie running for a program with coaches and upperclassmen who I respected both on and off the field.  As I have proved myself in this program, I have begun to develop more defined goals.  I want to give back to the program. I want to positively impact the program so future participants would benefit from my experience.

I am trying to accomplish this objective in three ways.  As a leader, I want to:

  1. Impact the culture of our team so we attract and provide a rewarding experience for all runners,
  2. Raise the level of team performance so that certain goals - previously not on our the radar screen - become a team focus, and
  3. Raise the goals of others through my own individual performances.

At a high level (and reflecting the level of competition), my collegiate athletic goals are similar.  I initially want to find a program with a great culture - a program that includes coaches and teammates who I respect on and off the field.  Longer-term, I would hope that I can have a positive impact on the program, help others, and make the program better for future participants.

Training

  • Cross Country and Track and Field Training Notes
  • 3 years
  • For the following reasons, I believe that I have opportunity for improvement as I continue to train smart and increase my training load. First, I have only been training for two years since entering high school in the fall of 2016. (Prior to high school, I played travel soccer and did not participate in competitive youth or middle school running programs.) Second, I had a stress fracture during my sophomore year (2017) which ended that season prematurely. (I was able to resume training in early 2018 and had a fulfilling sophomore track season running primarily the 800 meters.) Finally, I entered the 2018 cross country season determined to stay healthy and worked with my coach to create a plan to perform at a high level on limited mileage (less than 30 miles per week). I was able to set a personal record of 15:20 for 3 miles. My goal is to gradually increase my training workload and determine my potential on both the track (during my junior season) and in cross country next year (my senior season).
