What sets me apart from other student-athletes is my ability to stay calm and perform well under stressful conditions. An example of me staying calm in stressful situations occurred during the 2021 Junior Olympics, in Florida. There was the expectation for athletes to arrive early to adhere to covid protocols, including testing before each event. I arrived 10 hours before my event and had to wait in long lines for testing. The covid testing took longer than expected. I knew that by the time I got to my long jump event I would not have much time to warm-up and get my body prepared. Instead of stressing I wasted no time and did as much of a warm-up as I could to get my body ready for competition.
I did my run throughs and saw that I wasn’t where I needed to be on the board. I talked to my coach and he recommended an adjustment and I trusted that what he said was right. I ended up jumping nearly 7 inches farther than I had before at any other meet. In addition to being able to stay calm during a difficult moment, I am also encouraging to my teammates and no matter how bad things are or get, I always choose to find something positive to think about. I think that being able to communicate with others well when needed and thinking critically are some attributes that I believe would be helpful as a collegiate student-athlete.
Something that motivates me is being a guy that other people can count on. I want people to be able to trust me with tasks, game time decisions, and other things as well. In college I would like to excel in my sports as well as my academics. In academics I want to take classes that would challenge me to learn and think harder and more in depth so that I could grow my knowledge in many subjects that could help shape my future for my desired career as an engineer if going pro in sports does not work out.
