My name is Alex Matlock, and I am looking for a new place to call home. As of fall 2012, I am a senior attending Shelbyville High school in Shelbyville, IL. I am active in both cross country and track and I have worked hard to get to where I am now. I have earned a Varsity letter in both track and cross country as a Sophomore, Junior and now working on two more letters as a Senior. At the end of cross country season, my team won every invite this fall but one, won our Okaw Conference meet, placed 2nd at Regionals, and placed 3rd in Sectionals to advance to our state meet. At the IHSA 1A Cross Country state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria, I led my team with a 31st finish and that helped us bring home a huge 3rd place trophy! During the summer, we set our goal to be fifth or better at state, and we did better than that and are now officially the fastest team in school history. Currently, I hold the fourth fastest individual time in our school's history. What a great honor for all of us. I set many goals for myself this fall. I won our Shelbyville Invite and set the new course record, broke my goal time of 15:21, earned All Conference honors and led my team in conference, regionals, sectionals and at the state meet. Throughout the season, I steadily put in times in the 15:20 to upper 15:00's. During track season, I participate in the 3200 and 1600, but I prefer the 3200. Last year I was our sectional champion and went on to the state meet in Charleston. My coach decided to scratch me in the 3200 to be a member of the 4 x 800 relay team that finished with an 8th place medal. It was a great experience to be on the podium with my teammates. In the Spring 2013 track season, I want to break the school's 3200 meter record and advance to the state meet again; but this time I want to participate in the 3200 and reach another goal for myself-another state medal. My dedication does not stop with just showing up to practice, I also am very dedicated to my classes as well. Off the course, as of the end of my junior year I have a 4.06 GPA, an ACT composite score was 33, and was recently named an Illinois State Scholar and chosen for the IHSA All State Academic Team. My activities include National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. Running and education are equally important to me; I am looking for a school that would offer me a challenge in academics as well as running. I have set lofty goals for myself and I am on my way to achieving them. My plans for my undergrad are studying biomedical/mechanical engineering and a possibly going to medical school. My desire is to find a coach that appreciates my dedication, intensity and determination and is ready to show me how to get even more out of myself. I am looking for a coach that will help me perfect my running style and make me a memorable recruit. I thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.
