Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Andwele Shurland. I am 19 years old and currently finishing my senior year of high school at Kingston College. My entire track and field career has been about resilience and working hard to perfect my craft. I am a fighter and an underdog, one that has been counted out and doubted for years. Either not being the fastest or even the smartest in the classroom. I am a person who has and will always want to excel and try prove people wrong by exceed expectations. One such was when I became the Head boy of Kingston College as I was wasn't even thought about to be even a candidate by my peers for this high position of student leadership.

I have competed in the annual Boys and Girls Championships for over the last 3 years and would have competed in my fourth and final Championship this year. However, due to unforseen circumstances regarding the global pandemic COVID-19 the championships have been cancelled. I have competed in two events over the three year span both being the Medley Relay and and the boys open Pole Vault. I have obtained medals in both events and have worked myself up to being one of the best Pole Vaulters in the last three at the Championship.

I have many goals that I would ant to achieve at the collegiate level. Firstly, I would like to help my school win a championship by being my best self and giving all the points needed. I am not afraid of the call of duty and would do anything to help my team win. Secondly. I aim is to win and to be the best whether its is competitions or even just training for I believe that if I keep my my mind in a competitive mode even in training it will come naturally in competitions. I want to be able not only to make my family proud but also my nation proud. Living on a small Island predominately known for its achievements on the track with the likes of Usain Bolt, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, I would like to make the nation be known for more than what it has to offer on the track but also in the fields. I am determined to put Jamaica in the mix of all the other great nations in the Pole Vault.

I am a firm believer of having an education is more important than any other activity as I a  student first and athlete second. I try my best in all my class and seek out help and information to help in my weak points. I must say that the balance of academics and sports is not easy but I know it can be done with sacrifice, discipline and hard work. I try my best to exercise discipline at both home and school and encourage my peers to work hard in order to achieve excellence.

In conclusion, I am a team player and would be the back bone of the team bringing life and energy to it. I am someone who loves comradery making the team think as one unit with one goal, that is to win a Championship.
