When I represent something bigger than myself, I find a deeper level of pride and ambition to achieve my goals. This is my mindset as I participate in multiple extracurricular activities such as track and field, baseball, and music.
A regular week for me would consist of school five days a week followed by a combination of track, band, baseball or softball practices (I play for my high school team). All my nights end with time set aside for homework and studies. I have learned to balance all of this and still have a high-grade point average.
I could always remember when I first started participating in the seven-grade physical education class where the coach was teaching the class the basics of high jump, I quickly caught on and started “flopping” almost instantly. I was told by the coach to join the school track team. That same year was the first time I competed for my school. I did not do well but it did not dampen my spirit because I enjoyed high jump and wanted to better my craft. High Jump has opened avenues for me, and I have learned many things about myself while training for the event. I learned how to be disciplined and how to be a good winner and loser. Most importantly I learned to take what I did wrong, reflect on it, and correct it for the next time. I went on to qualified for CARIFTA 2019 games, which was held in the Cayman Islands.
Upon completing high school, I wish to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Economics while competing in the NCAA for my university. Getting to this track and field level wasn’t a walk in the park. I have had many opportunities to represent not only myself but my school and my country. When I represent something bigger than myself, I find a deeper level of pride and ambition to achieve what I am doing. When a cause is bigger than me, I put my best foot forward and approach the task at hand. Your school track and field program gives me a chance to show my dedication to a cause, and I would like to display this passion in your school, whether it is in a sporting event or a science competition.
