I want to attend a college that pushes me as an athlete, student, and person, and allows me to pursue my passions on and off the track. I want to make a similar impact on my college team as I have on my high school and club teams, inspiring and leading others, all while doing what I love.
I have played sports my whole life, and from a young age I knew that I wanted to continue playing sports for as long as I could. I didn't, however, know that the sport I would end up pursuing would be track. I’ve always been a runner, but I didn’t start track until 6th grade, and from my first race I fell in love with it.
Track has taught me so much about being an athlete and a person. I’ve learned that hard work isn’t always rewarded right away and that it is important to stay patient and keep working even when you aren’t seeing the results you want. In track you have to put in work for times that might not come until next year. I have also made some of my closest friends through track, and I have seen the importance of having a like minded group around you. There’s a special bond that forms when you are all working for hours and hours over weeks and months just trying to get better together. It has been really special to see how close I have gotten with some of them over our high school careers and the connection we have developed.
In the fall of my sophomore year I joined a club team and have trained with them every fall, winter, and summer since. Club was a big commitment, between the travel time and practice, it averaged 15 hrs/week, but I knew it was something I wanted to do. Even with this, I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA (unweighted), take rigorous classes, work on weekends at my local hospital, and still have free time for friends and family. Because of this, I know that I will be able to handle the commitment that comes from being a student-athlete in college and balance all of my activities.
Throughout my high school career I have received awards for dedication, and have won Most Inspirational both my sophomore and junior year, an award voted on by teammates. Both my club and high school coaches look to me as a leader, and I am grateful for any opportunity to improve my leadership skills and help others. My academics are also very important to me and I have put in a lot of work to maintain the highest GPA and take challenging classes that also interest me. I look forward to carrying this work ethic with me as I take these next steps as a student athlete.
