My high school cancelled all contact sports for the fall of 2020 because of the pandemic. After years of competing on travel and school soccer teams, I was left without a sport. With little running experience, and wanting to participate in a high school sport, I chose to run cross-county for the first time as a sophomore, and never looked back.
I participated in both cross country and track as a sophomore and junior. I made states for cross-county both years. During my junior year, I improved my 5k time by 57 seconds. As a junior, I finished 3rd at Districts for the mile, improving my overall time as a junior by 19 seconds.
I know in the short time I have been running cross country and track I have only scratched the surface of my running potential. In addition to improving my times in cross-county and track, this year I received the School Board Award in both sports. I was nominated by my teammates as the individual whose hard work, dedication, leadership, cooperation, and support has benefitted the team both on and off the field. The award is designated for the member of the team who is a “Team Player.”
My collegiate goals are to excel both academically and athletically. Academics are very important to me and always have been. I currently maintain a 3.9 GPA. I am a member of the National Honor Society, participate in student government as Class Vice President, Interact Volunteer Service Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
In addition to winter training for running, I have also participated in alpine ski racing for the past seven years for my local ski hill, Elk Mountain, making Pennsylvania Ski Championships in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020. Like running, competitive ski racing requires both discipline and sacrifice which includes weekly night gate training, early morning and all day weekend training. We also spend time mentoring younger ski racers.
I believe I would be a great candidate for a collegiate team because I understand the value of hard work, discipline and being a team player.
