Personal Statement

I have only been doing track for 2 years, freshmen and sophomore year.  My coach introduced me to hurdles about two weeks in to practice because I wasn't really a fit in anything else. As a freshmen I was only 5'8", 120 pounds and not very big at all, I could hardly bench press 95 pounds.  I was not a sprinter at all, I was a decent 800 runner but probably wouldn't improve at all.  I could only run a 400 in about 1:03. I was almost just going to quit track because I wasn't good at anything, until my coach told us he needed a new hurdler as our only one was a senior.  From the first time I went over a hurdle I loved it.  My coach told me I could do very well.  As a freshmen I improved from a 48 to a 44.9.  I took 13th place at the sectional meet and ended my season there.  I worked out over the summer, and coming my sophomore year my first run in 300m hurdles was about a 44.67.  I was not happy at all at that, my goal for the year was to make state even know I was sure I had slim chances, but I told myself to work harder.  For about 3 weeks straight of meets I only beat that time one time, with a 44.42.  Then came one meet I just started out of the blocks really strong and hard and ran a 43.49.  I then realized that in this event, the was not to run an average pace and save your energy, but just sprint hard out of the blocks and run hard the entire race, and be dead tired by the end of the race.  My next race was conference meet and I won the event with a 42.57.  Then came regionals where I took second running a 42.67.  The person I lost to was one that I beat at conference. I was not happy because I was seeded for 5th place now at sectionals, and seeds 3 and 4 were seeded just .1 seconds faster than me.  I knew I'd have to run harder than I ever had, and I did that, running a 41.7 and making it to state by just.03 seconds.  At the state competition I took 9nth in prelims, and 8th in the finals.  I have two years left of high school for track, and am hoping to make the best of it.  After high school I want to keep running track, it is my favorite sport by far and i enjoy doing it.  I am looking for a college that needs hurdlers, and is very competitive.  I am a very hard worker, and am willing to work as hard as I can to make it to college level, and continue working hard from there.
