Entering 6th grade, I was looking for a spring sport to fill the time after deciding not to play baseball, and, although I was hesitant at first, I decided to give volleyball a try. I have to say it was a great decision. Coming into high school after missing my 8th grade season from COVID, I attended all offered camps and sessions that I could to try to improve before the season started. This paid off when I made the Freshman A team after showcasing my natural blocking ability to coaches. They told me early on that they saw potential in me and they wanted me to play at the higher level. But, they also told me that I was underdeveloped compared to other kids. I knew I would have to work hard in order to improve and prove that they made the right decision. I continued to show up, push myself, and listen to the coaches. By the end of the season I had improved greatly and this carried over to club the following year where I continue to refine my skills.
While playing I learned determination to succeed and push myself at all times. I learned how to hone my natural gifts such as a high jump and height in order to achieve success. I also learned the necessity of matching technique with power when playing and staying focused on the game. This determination and will to succeed has pushed me in school as well, encouraging me not to give up when faced with challenging schoolwork. All of this has combined to form my belief that I can succeed at the college level both academically as well as athletically. I’m looking for a college where I will be able to push myself on the court as well as in the classroom in order to achieve my best both at college and in my future life. I appreciate the notice, and I thank you for taking the time to read my story.
