Six years ago, I decided to give an unfamiliar sport a try. I touched the water and fell in love. Water Polo has become part of me. Because of my drive to play I learned to mentally prepare for practice and matches. This spilled over into being prepared for classes, managing friends and family, and learning how to study effectively.
It was important to me to build my skills and become an integral part of the team. I felt that I could become a leader with the abilities to guide, to be a positive influence, and to demonstrate that hard work and being part of a team gives lessons for life. My motivation paid off as I am now a captain.
The position of goalie gives me a different vantage point in the water from other players. How players navigate the space can be assessed, the height and speed of players can be perceived, and directions can be more clearly given from the net. This gave me the responsibility of learning how to communicate and to think on my feet. I also learned how to bring out the best in other players, to nurture their skills, and to organize groups fairly and effectively.
With increasingly more skill and responsibility, I felt more confidence in myself academically. College level English and Probability and Statistics classes as well as Advanced Placement Government are in my current schedule while I hold a 3.8 GPA. I am grateful to every role model and coach I had who showed me ways I could shine. I can only do them proud by paying it forward.
