My name is Mackenzie Daffron and I’m a junior at Otay Ranch High School. I grew up playing flag football and eventually contact football. Entering into high school I realized I needed to shift my focus to a sport that would continue to fit my drive, hustle, and athleticism as I matured and allow me a chance to play in college. When I first stepped on the court my skill set was low, but I quickly fell in love and knew that I wanted to play at the collegiate level.
I first started playing my freshman year and I noticed my skill level was already a few steps behind the girls who have been playing for several years. This pushed me to work hard everyday. During track season my freshman year I experienced left and right hip avulsions. This required a significant recovery period. Entering into my sophomore season, coming back from my injury and skills deficit was physically and mentally draining. I did not allow that setback to stop me from my goals and I continued everyday to push myself through conditioning, weight-training, shooting drills, and dribbling drills to make up for my late start. I continue to do these drills every day and after every practice and game to maintain my athleticism and continue to increase my skill level. Especially on the hard days, my drive pushes me to work harder knowing that nobody else but myself can obtain my dream of playing at the collegiate level.
Aside from my hustle, I am a very coachable and a positive player. I am always finding ways I can improve and learn from my mistakes, by getting feedback from coaches and watching film. I push myself to be the hardest worker on my team so I can lead by example. I take my role as a team leader and captain very seriously by pushing my teammates to be their best while remaining a positive and mature role model they can depend on.
I’m so blessed to be supported by amazing individuals, such as my parents who have also pushed me to be my best self off the court. I take school just as seriously as I do basketball, and study hard to maintain my 4.3 GPA. I’m also a part of the California Scholarship Federation honors society, and with my available time I participate/volunteer with the Youth For A Sustainable Future organization.
I want to go to college where I can work hard both in my studies and on the court. I would be so grateful to play at any collegiate level with a high competition level that will allow me to continue to grow as a player. I aspire to be one of the hardest working and driven players a coach will find.
