Personal Statement

I have been a driven person from a young age. I did not mind failure but I resented losing. As I have matured I have understood that those failures have taught me to get back up, be better next time, keep on improving and show my true ability. This is not only reserved to the way I view my basketball, it is also how I see life. I am a determined young woman who strives for excellence both in the sporting arena and academically. Completing grade 6 I was the recipient of the school's sports person of the year and entered high school with the same determination to succeed. I have received top awards for cross country running, athletics and all round general sport. This has enabled me to become a school leader. I have been selected as Sports Captain for middle school and middle school leader for the general cohort. This year I was awarded the MVP for our school basketball team which were premiers in the state's Associated Grammar Schools Victoria. I have recently been selected in Victoria's state country basketball team which will be competing at the Australian Junior Country Cup in January 2023. This places me in the top 20 Victorian Country female basketballer's for the entire state. It is at the championship that I will play other state teams and the best that New Zealand has to offer.

The year of 2023 has seen me represent one of Victoria's largest junior clubs at the highest representative club level. We play in U18 in the Victorian Championship division. I have also played senior women's level basketball in Victoria's Championship Youth League competition for Dandenong Rangers. This is reserved for players under 23 years of age. As a 16 year old, I grabbed this opportunity to step up and compete against players that had 5 to 6 years of age on me. I bumped bigger bodies, took on the faster game pace and relished in the experience. I started the season out sheepishly and reserved, however, by the conclusion of the season I was consistently in receipt of double double stats with 1-2 steals each game. I have become stronger as a basketballer, but more importantly, I have become a smarter basketballer.

While I have received several sporting awards, I am most proud of my academic awards that have been awarded throughout high school. The award that I am most proud of is the Louisa Dunkley Shield which is awarded to only one student in the school for that academic year. It is for the student that best displays a real sense of community, fairness and equality. I live this ethos daily, furthermore, I am happy to challenge the status quo to ensure we remain innovative and lead by example. While there have been coaches who have tried to lure me to other basketball clubs, I value loyalty and have the moral courage to respectfully decline those who have reached out.

While I see a future in basketball, I am acutely aware that it is not a lifelong career. I will seek out universities and colleges that can meet my academic expectations, focussing on a career in forensic medicine, neuroscience and biomedicine. This is my passion and where I see my future once basketball has come to an end.

At this stage, I have not conducted SATs or ACTs, however, converting my current school grades to an American GPA using an official GPA calculator, I have a GPA of 3.8

I look forward to hearing from you and will be looking to enter university in 2024.

  • 2023 Dandenong Rangers (Championship Youth League)
  • This is a competition for U23 years of age senior women. This was my first season at senior level, playing as a 15 year old. The start of the season was slow for me as I adjusted to playing against women who were 5-6 years older. As I grew to understand Senior women's basketball, my confidence and determination to play my best improved immensely which saw the second half of the season stats rise considerably and I was rewarded with a position in the starting 5 for the second half of the season. A tremendous effort for someone in their first season at Senior ball as a 15 year old.
