Hi Coaches!
Simply put, I aspire to be serve God and others, all the while being the best version of myself (Sam). As a teammate, daughter, sister, friend, student and human being. Candidly, I'm a year younger than most freshman (two years younger with some of the reclass kids). Some would say that is challenging and perhaps I'm too early in the recruiting process. But I view it as positive and special. I'm only going to get stronger and better! With my parents help, I wanted to be proactive and get the process started now.
What makes me a good candidate for your team? First, I think I've got the personality that fits and helps any team. I've been able to adapt and get along well with all kinds of different players from all kinds of different backgrounds. Second, I think my unselfish game fits that same mode in terms of winning chemistry. I've had to play all 5 positions over the last few years - from point guard to power/point center. My parents and coaches have instilled a "make winning plays" mentality, which often includes the little and less flashy things. Making the extra pass. Swinging the ball. Getting to the mid-line. Attacking with purpose. Letting the game come to you. I really enjoy playing with other players who have high level hoops IQ (e.g. knowing when to cut back-door, etc).
What makes me different from other recruits? That's a tough question. I can't speak to other players, of course. But I think my combination of humility, vulnerability and competitiveness standout. I'm still a work-in-progress and trying to navigate all the pressures and anxieties that come with being a teenage girl - and I'm a year younger than most of my classmates. And then you add in the pressures of playing high/elite level basketball? I don't want to disappoint my parents (who both played basketball in college) or let anyone down (especially myself). I definitely put a lot of pressure on myself and it can be overwhelming at times. But I'm learning that so many athletes and successful people have the same pressures and anxieties. Acknowledging it is part of the process and working through that adversity is maybe what makes me different - especially at such a young age. As I practice and get better at the mental side (not just the physical skills side), I think I might be able to help others, including my future teammates, coaches, etc. It would be really cool to have that connection and positive impact on others.
Hope to talk with you soon!
Samantha
