Basketball has always been a part of my life. From when I was 3 years old, I would play with my brother, and my dad on our mini hoop in our kitchen. To now when my brother and I play 1v1 against each other. Basketball has taught me so much about myself and who I want to be. It taught me that confidence, heart, and good energy are a necessity not only on the court but in life.
When I found out I was interested in basketball, I was in 2nd grade. My dad was coaching 3rd–6th graders and he would take me to the gym with him and my brother. My dad is the reason I work as hard as I do because he has always been straight forward with me. I was younger, but I would participate in the practices. We had a scrimmage one day but I did not get to play, and I asked my dad why. He bluntly said, “You don’t work as hard as the others, and you're not as good as them." I was upset after this comment. After the practice was over, he was talking to me and just told me if I started working on it and get better, I would get to play. Ever since, I have made it my goal to be the hardest worker in the gym, whether it was practice or just me and my dad in the gym.
Starting my high school career, I knew I wanted to be a varsity starter my freshman year. I worked hard, and I accomplished this goal. We had won regionals and made it to the state quarterfinals that year. I broke three records that year. I set the Rebounding record (25), ft.% (74%), and an average of 14 rebounds per game. The main thing I learned from that year was that I wanted to be a leader, an energy catalyst, and, overall, just a great teammate. When my sophomore year rolled around, we had an amazing season, going 22-2, winning regionals, and being state runners-up. Sophomore year, I learned how to handle different situations and how to move well without the ball, as I would be face-guarded and double-teamed most of the time.
Some other traits that I think are unique about me is that I am a big believer in keeping my body healthy, I love to cook, weightlift, go on walks, and read, and I am a big plant lover. I am also a very mentally tough person, so harsh criticism does not hurt my feelings. I take criticism as something I just need to improve on. As a teammate, I take pride in being cooperative, encouraging, loud, and mentally tough. I do not let one bad play ruin how I play the rest of the night. When I do make a mistake, it is my job to not give up on the play, but to get the ball back. I have played volleyball as well, and last year I was grateful enough to be the MVP of the league. I enjoy weightlifting and volleyball because they allow me to strengthen other muscles in my body to stay healthy and strong.
