Ever since I was in elementary school, all I ever learned was how to be a team player. I always constantly heard, "play unselfish basketball" or "the game isn't about you." While those ideals gave me valuable life lessons, I've learned there's a more complex way of being an athlete the older you get...
As I got older, I began to realize that this "unselfish play" of basketball I had been using, was becoming less and less to my benefit. Actually, it started to slowly become my downfall. I understand and have understood that basketball is a team sport, and that you alone cannot win a basketball game. There is an extremely important aspect of family and accountability that only comes with an equal responsibiliy you get from being a team player. But when you want to succeed, and move on to greatness, (especially as a point guard) you need to be able to have that "Mamba Mentality." You need to be able to recognize when it's time to take over the game. I would say that was my biggest issue- playing passive and timidly. You can't be a good point guard playing that way. Confidence really can make all the difference in your gameplay, and it is not the same thing as being arrogant.
As I continue my basketball journey, I want to be more and more of a fearless basketball player. That is the factor that I believe will set me apart from other recruits. There are many players who have the same skillset that I do, but a fearless mentality while understanding the necessity of being a team player- that's more of a rarity. I believe that I have the ability to fulfill the expectations of a college athlete- being the fearless player I want to be is still something I continue to work to get better at every day.
