Hi, I'm Siri Martinez. As a high school athlete, I’ve come across many challenges academically, physically, and mentally throughout my high school experiences. From freshman year to senior year, I’ve participated in both basketball and softball. As an athlete you’re challenged to balance your academics with practices and game schedules, which isn’t as easy as I first thought. Being short in stature, not getting a lot of playing time, being new to softball, and having hard workouts produced a lot of mental challenges. I had to learn how to push myself to improve my skills within both sports. Playing basketball while being only 5ft tall has never been the easiest, but I didn’t let my height discourage me. I put in that extra work to go from not getting a lot of playing time the first half of my freshman year, to becoming team captain and being a starter on JV by Junior year. Being the height that I am resulted in many days where my mind would tell me, “you’ll never be good enough, they’ll make fun of you, or just quit.” I didn’t let my negative thoughts dictate my actions. Instead, I used them to motivate me to further develop my skills. As a teammate I've always had the heart and hustle for basketball and always made it a point to contribute on and off the court. My goal at the end of the day is to find a college that suits me in Texas, preferably where I can study Psychology and/or Engineering.
