Personal Statement
My name is Saylor Upshaw and I am a student athlete at San Marcos High School, class of 2023. Prior to playing basketball I was on a traveling cheer team for 7 years competing in UCA and NCAA competitions. I enjoyed cheering but later realized that it was not something I could see myself doing in the future. I also ran track in middle school. I competed in the 100m, 200m, 1x4 relay and high jump. The competitiveness of track was always stressful but I managed to place in my events. Track taught me how to carry my own weight as an individual and at the same time contribute as a teammate. Moving forward I would like to keep that mindset as an athlete playing basketball.
I enjoy working with kids and I can definitely see myself doing something similar in the future.I recently volunteered at the Basketball Special Olympics tournament at Texas State University running the clock and as a score keeper. Seeing how happy the players and families are to play basketball was so much fun to be apart of the experience. I have been volunteering with the Basketball Special Olympics for 3 years. When Covid hit we did not get to have the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. Choosing a path for my future is very challenging but I am thinking through many options. My main focus today is making good grades and working hard on the court. I recently received an invite to apply for our high school National Honor Society based off my current GPA. I am very excited about this opportunity.
