My name is Amelia Rigel and this is my basketball story…
I am a 5’9’’ junior shooting guard in the 2024 class. I was born in New York City and now live in Wisconsin. As a junior, I am a starter for my Brookfield Academy Varsity Basketball Team. My strengths are my 3-point shooting, my work ethic, leadership and positive energy I bring to my coaches and team.
I love basketball as much as any girl in the 2024 class, but my basketball story is what sets me apart from other players in the 2024 class. My basketball story is about overcoming obstacles, perseverance and hard work.
During my middle school years, I was continuously kept off the top teams at my school not based on my play, but for reasons unrelated to basketball. Instead of letting this adversity get me down and feeling sorry for myself, I got in the gym, trained and got better. I worked on my game tirelessly, worked out with trainers and former professional and Division 1 college players, including Anna DeForge and Heidi Hamilton, and put in hours of work on my shooting, ball handling, conditioning and learning the game. I persevered through that adversity and all that hard work has paid off. Most importantly, I learned that no one can stand in your way if you love something and want to improve as a player and a person, and put in the hard work, sweat and tears to meet your goals. I also learned to never be satisfied with your successes and continue to strive to get better.
My basketball story is not only shaped by my experiences in the gym and on the floor, but also by the coaches I have, especially my coaches at Brookfield Academy - Coach Teri Stamps, Coach CJ and Coach Weithaus. I have learned plenty of X’s and O’s from them, but also the importance of leadership, playing hard on every play, being aggressive, how defensive pressure impacts games, and how bringing positive energy and being a good teammate impacts the chemistry of a team.
I also have the same commitment in the classroom as I do on the court. I currently have a GPA of 3.5 at my high school. I am looking for a college that will give me the best opportunity to be challenged and succeed both on and off the court.
This is my basketball story and I would welcome the opportunity to share more of my story with you.
