Personal Statement
All through my high school career, I've strived to be an active leader in my school: from running for executive council and being a three-sport athlete. I would love to continue and utilize my leadership abilities in college and beyond into my career. Building relationships with those around me is something I hold very dearly. I attended a Leadership camp in the summer of 2018, before my senior year that impacted me greatly. The camp's motto is, "Leadership is Relationships." Before this camp, I had never heard the word Leadership broken down to such a simple definition before. Don't get me wrong, leadership's definition entails a lot more characteristics than just building relationships, but I truly believe that it is the foundation which it is built upon. Leadership has always come very natural to me; therefore, so has building long-lasting relationships with my teammates. Here is one of my favorite leadership quotes from the great Vince Lombardi, " The leader can never close the gap between himself and the group. If he does, he is no longer what he must be. He must walk the tightrope between the consent he must win, and the control he must exert." This means a leader should always continue to relate to their teammates, never thinking they are better than their peers. I find that very important in building a bond with your peers.
