I’m on the varsity dive team at my high school and I’ll admit, our conference events did not go well for me this past year. I reflected long and hard about what went wrong and I realized that I needed to put more effort and a lot of thought into my diving at all stages.
As a diver for the past seven years, I’ve become accustomed to getting feedback from my coaches and acting on their critique and advice. I immediately scheduled an appointment with my coaches and discussed what we could do to make me more successful at diving that has become my passion for so long. After reviewing tapes of my dives, we created new dive lists that challenged me to learn new dives while also enhancing my abilities. School ended at the beginning of June and I had just three weeks to get my lists right before the Zone F Championships in Flagstaff this past summer (summer 2022). I immediately doubled my daily practice schedule with my coach and got started. It worked. Not only did I have my personal best at Zones this year, my passion for the sport was completely reinvigorated. Right after the award ceremony during that Zones event, my head coach pulled me aside to let me know how impressed he was with my dive list. He challenged me to continue on my new path with even more new ops and vols. I accepted his challenge and began working with my coaches once more when we returned home. I am really excited to work on the new lists throughout this upcoming year to perform at the 2023 Championships.
This experience has helped me learn how to recognize and evaluate my weaknesses and, even more so, understand how to make adjustments to succeed. I'm very grateful to have a support team in both my dive world with my coaches and home life with my parents. I’ve learned some valuable lessons this summer that I’ll be able to apply to my life in all areas including academics and personal relationships.
