Playing college golf in America as a student from a tiny country in Asia? Playing golf in the LPGA tour? How did that little girl have an audacity to say that that is her 'dream' out loud when she was 8 years old and have no clue about golf? And yes, I am 'that girl'.
My name is Chananya Domethong or Opal. I am from Bangkok, Thailand and have been playing golf since I was 8 years old. I just moved to The Webb School in Bell Buckle, TN, as a senior this year. My 18 hole average this fall so far is 70.5. Last year, I was an exchange student in Illinois and finished 4th place in the state tournament (class 1A).
Coming from Thailand to rural Middle Tennessee, I want to challenge myself academically and athletically to another level. I remembered watching college golf on the TV screen with my parents and have dreamed that one day that amazing player would be me. I have dedicated my life to make my dream reachable. I have been through many Highs and lows in my junior golf career. Of course, there were some moment that I doubt in myself and my ability. Can I really do this? Am I in the right pathway?.There were, definitely, some points that I burnt out. However, there is a voice in the back of my mind reminding me , " Just because it seems impossible, doesn't mean that it is impossible". I stood back up and ready embrace the harder challenge from now on. "What does't kill you make you stronger".
As a golfer and a student, I am very determined, ambitious, and committed. I love studying and playing golf simultaneously, and I hope to pursue them both in the future. I believe that though I might not the best player yet, one day I will. I believe that I am the prospective student and athlete that many colleges are looking for.
