Personal Statement

Permission to speak from U of Northern Colorado: http://recruit-match.ncsasports.org/fasttrackfiles/clientFiles/534326_1319559249440_permis.pdf

(The paragraph following this one is from my Senior year when I was looking for a college to play Division I golf.)  In January 2011, I was recruited by the University of Northern Colorado with an acedemic/athletic scholarship for the Fall 2011 Season.  After a few weeks in my favorite vacation state, Colorado, I realized that I wanted to be closer to home.  I thoroughly enjoyed my first semester at UNC as a student/athlete!  It is affirmation that I DO want to continue to improve my game, be part of a team and play Division I golf!  After one college season under my belt, I completely understand the challenges that surface as a student/athlete---and I am ready to continue reaching toward my goals in golf.  I am looking for a program that will help me to improve as a player: mentally, physically and spiritually!  I have not learned all there is to learn about the game of golf, and am ready to embrace all that I can from  a strong college program!

From 2010---I am very excited about becoming a college athlete in the fall of 2011! I only realized that I wanted to continue golf in college October 5th, 2010. I believe I have what it takes to play at the Division I level!  I have had a GREAT experience at Jasper High School as a student-athlete! I am a good student, am very organized and have good time-management skills! I have a wonderful support system here in my area especially within the golf community.   I live in Jasper, Indiana which is a very small town. I am very excited about being exposed to more culture, different types of people and experience traveling during my college career! Combined with college athletics, I believe that these experiences will help me to be well-rounded and better prepared for life! As I stated, I wasn't sure that I wanted to play at a Division I level until the second day of the 2010 IHSAA STATE FINALS! Given the horrible cold/rainy conditions and pressure at the STATE FINALS tournament, playing 2 under for 5 holes gave me new outlook on my game. I know that I haven't reached my peak in this sport and want to continue improving. THIS was exactly what I have worked so hard for through my high school years.  I know I can compete with the best! I played travel softball intensely from 4th - 9th grade and participated in the IHSAA State Softball finals my freshman year where we finished runner up! As much as I loved softball, I quit softball after state finals my frosh year to pursue golf in a more serious manner. I only started to play golf competitively my freshman year in high school. Therefore, I have not experienced the burn-out that some players feel at this point in their career. In fact, I have so much desire to learn more about my inner game as well as my physical game! My Mom and Dad have been vital to the maturation of my game over the years. They have helped to guide me in competition, in my practice sessions, encouraging lessons, in my sportsmanship qualities as well as leadership roles that I have had to assume over the years. Not to the point of pushing me harder, but always helping me to balance my life with golf, spiritual growth, family time, friendships and education. My most memorable moments in golf are the 2009 IHSAA Sectional Win as an individual, 75 at the Fuzzy Invite this season, being the medalist at 14+ matches this season, and of course, leading my team to the second day of STATE FINALS shooting an 81/79 for 14th place tie individually. It was the first time in 30 years for a Jasper team to play the second day! But as important as the scores I have posted over the past years, I believe that the FCA TIPS Camps at the Gongaware Golf Academy were most life-changing in every aspect of my life! I have attended a camp for three years now and hope to become a Huddle Leader in 2012. With God at my side on and off the course, it has enabled me to utilize the gifts that I was blessed with to be the best person I can be!
