Hi I’m MacKenzie Schmeltz. I have been playing golf since I was six, participating in local junior camps. I started playing competitively at age 9, and every year since I have worked not only to improve my game, but also to expand my competitive field, working my way from playing a scramble-style match to a team league to a local junior tour to the statewide Callaway Meijer tour.
Growing up playing in a field of older boys, I have come to understand that even if I can’t drive the ball the furthest, I can make up for it in short game, especially putting. My mom says I’m a “closer,” meaning I can keep my game strong throughout the round. My greatest strength, however, is my ability to analyze my game. I have learned over the past five years the mechanics of a golf swing from my swing coach, and am able to make adjustments when necessary during a round. I am able to apply this knowledge to my job, where I am a camp coach for elementary age junior golfers at my home course.
The idea of playing in college has always been in the back of my mind, but really cemented itself this past season when I realized that I’m not ready for next year to be my last competitive season. That being said, the right academic fit comes first. I am passionate about math and sciences, and eventually want to go to medical school and become a doctor. While golf is important to me, the biggest factor that will go into my college choice will be which college gives me the best chance possible to getting into medical school. I am looking forward to continuing my golfing and academic journey into the future!
