Personal Statement

My name is Megan Whittaker and I am a golfer at Elkhorn South High School from Elkhorn, Nebraska. I will graduate in 2018. I've been playing competitive golf for the past three years.

My recent accomplishments include: winning the 2016 Nebraska Girls State Match Play tournament, getting 4th at the PGA Junior Series at Arbor Links in July 2016, qualifying for the 2016 National Drive Chip and Putt competition, winning the Lincoln Capital City Championship, being a part of the Four-State competition, and qualifying for the National Optimist.

Some of my other accomplishments include: 2014 Class A Team State Champions, 2014 Class A Individual Runner Up, 2015 Nebraska Girls State Match Play semi-finalist, winning 8 out of 9 high school golf tournaments in the fall of 2015, shooting a (-6) 68 in my first high school tournament last fall, and being named to the 2015 Nebraska Junior Girls All-Star Team.

I am very interested in playing collegiate golf because I love being a part of a team, and I love the game. I am a very hard worker both in the classroom and on the course. I have worked really hard on my game for the past three years. When I started the summer before my freshman year my handicap was a 24, I brought it down to a 10 by the next summer. I started this summer with a 5 and now I am at a 0.4. My GPA is a 4.0 after my sophomore year. I also run varsity track for my high school and qualified for state my sophomore year. I help in the community with volunteer activities wtih my church, Kids Against Hunger, LPGA girls golf, and through the school. I am very organized, a good time manager, and a natural leader. As a hard worker, I have high expectations for myself, as such I set high goals to work towards and encourage my teammates to do the same. I expect to continue to meet my goals and work hard throughout the rest of my high school career and in the future.

I shot 71 (-1) on the stroke play qualifying day and was the medalist and the one seed. I won my first match 5 and 4 the next morning shooting 38 on the front. I lost the next match on the 18th hole. I finished in the top 8 but never advanced to the final four.

The first day I shot 83 and the second day I bounced back with a 76 which was the lowest score of the day. I finished 5th out of 20. The course rating/slope was 76.0/131. The yardage was 5992. The first day we played in down pouring rain for the first 6 holes and then had a lightning delay. The second day there was down pouring rain that we played in for 5 holes.

I won the 54th girls state match play championship! The first day was stroke play and I shot 76 on par 72 and was in third. The second day was match play and I shot 35 (-1) on the front nine and remained one under through 14 holes where I won my match 5&4. That afternoon I shot 40 on the front nine and was even par on the back through 15. I won that match 4&3. The next morning I played the defending champion and shot 36 on the front and was -1 through 16 holes. I won that match 3&2. I then played that afternoon in the championship and shot 39 on the front and -1 on the back. I won that match 3&2. I was the overall champion and the course rating/slope was 73.5/126. The yardage was 5704.

I finished 2nd out of 18 with a score of 81 and was able to qualify for the national Optimist in August. The yardage was 5654 and there is no rating/slope for women from the tees we played. It was nice weather the whole day with 10 mph wind.

The weather was absolutely miserable with highs in the upper 40's and low 50's. There was 30+ mph wind and it was cloudy. I shot 87 on day 1 on a course rating/slope of 71.7/115 from 5559 yards. After day 1 our team was surprisingly in the lead by 13 strokes. We came into the tournament as underdogs. I was tied individually in 2nd place after day 1. On day 2 I shot 86. Our team also extended the lead by 2 more strokes. We won the Class A State Championship by 15 strokes, and I ended up in 2nd place individually out of 72.
