My name is Meirra Cavanaugh, I am a sophomore at Oasis Academy, located in Fallon, Nevada. Fallon is a relatively small rural town that is home to approximately 9,500 people. My family, which consists of my mother, father and two younger brothers has resided in Fallon since 2012. They have tought me several valuable skills which include qualities like compassion, determination, and how to be strong in tough situations. Through the peaks and valleys of life, the importance of family is paramount.
My family and I are active in our community, whether it's playing sports, participating in fundraisers, or community service projects. I am an active member with the Oasis Academy FFA which has taught me leadership skills, independence, and has increased my confidence in myself and peers. I am currently the secretary for my high school chapter. I collaborate with other secretarys, take minutes at meetings, and make sure to keep an active role within the chapter.
Academics are the most fundamental of life skills. I push myself daily through my academics and continue to hold strong communication with my teachers. I chose to continue my academic career at Oasis Academy as it is a college preparatory. I take several college courses at our local community college, Western Nevada College, throughout my four years in high school. I will graduate with my Associates Degree and this will prepare me to succeed by going onto a university.
Growing up in a small community like Fallon has helped me develop many attributes. One of these attributes is having close personal relationships with friends and family. I was told when I was younger that I was an “old soul”. I believe I was identified as an old soul because I am compassionate, sincere and focused. This is why I believe golf has been so beneficial for me and my growth, both physical and mental. Golf pushes you, and golf tests you to be in complete control of your mind and body. In the year that I have been playing golf, I have grown exponentially. I listen to my coaches, make changes, and ensure that I rely on my training.
My goal is to continue my golfing journey to the collegiate level. I have embraced the sport which I love and respect. Just like school, I push myself everyday with golf. Whether it's improving my smash factor in a net at home or improving my swing plane at the driving range, I am getting better everyday.
