Maya Jones '21 Recruiting Profile

I have always been competitive.  Whether it was in the backyard with my older brother, my school work or playing cards with my family, I am passionate about becoming the best.  I find hockey’s fast-paced physical game challenges me the way no other sport has.  

This past year has been full of excitement and change.  I am a starting Defenseman for Benilde St. Margaret's High School varsity team.  I play both the power play and the penalty kill.  I am particularly proud of the fact that I have a very strong plus-minus with very few goals scored while I am on the ice.   Last Spring, I played for Team Minnesota District 6 at USA Hockey’s National Championships in Michigan, finishing with 2 points in three games.  I was also chosen to participate in Minnesota's CCM HP 2002 Summer Development Camp.  Each of these experiences has shown me that I want to keep pushing myself to compete at higher and higher levels.  I would describe myself as a strong, physical, fast, two-way player with high hockey IQ.  At the 2017 MN HP Summer Development Camp, I earned the highest score in coachability.  What I love about hockey is the way you can dance and laugh with your teammates in the locker room and then get on the ice and play intense, powerful, team hockey. 

I love math and science.  While I have not yet settled on a major, I would like to pursue a career in either medicine, veterinary science or forensic science.  I am a member of Benilde's medical club and the Red Knight Volunteer Corp.  I love to ride horses and recently combined that love helping 4 hours a week at an organization called We Can Ride.  It helps children with disabilities gain strength, balance and confidence by riding horses.  

I work hard and strive to be the best at everything I do.  My teachers picked three words to describe me:  passionate, determined and leader.  I believe these qualities will add to any team I play for.
