Personal Statement
My name is Ella Chambers. My athletic career began when I was 5 years old with the more individual sports of swimming and Shotokan karate. I love to challenge myself and achieve my goals. I was in 6thgrade when my older sister’s hockey coach convinced me to try the position of goalie and I’ve never looked back! My individual sports served me well with my overall conditioning level from swimming and hand-eye coordination with tactical skills I gained from karate, allowing me to progress very quickly in my goalie training. I love being a goalie because it allows me to trust my teammates with them being able to count on me, working together as a team towards a common goal. Without my individual sports experiences, I would not have been able to appreciate how special being a part of a team truly is.
My academics are very important to me. In all things I never want to give anything but my best work. I am known to be very picky about my grades and stress if they are not up to my high standards. Although I struggled during the early grades in school due to severe amblyopia, I still loved learning. Having to go through the constant headaches, vision therapy exercises and challenges of toric lens contacts at a young age I learned to be patient with myself and persevere through hardship, pushing myself even harder to accomplish my goals. Even now, having attained my goal of having over a 4.0 GPA, I continue to challenge myself with college and AP courses. My favorite subjects are math and science and I plan to pursue a career in a STEM field.
As an athlete as well as student I am very analytical. I feel this is important as a goalie because I use that strength to continually learn, both from what I’ve done well and what I can do better. I thrive on analytical feedback and the challenges it provides. I have been told that I am a very coachable athlete and believe that it is due to my perseverance, analytical personality and commitment to excellence.
