My name is Chloe Kim, and I am a 2008 full-right goaltender for the 19U AAA New Jersey Bandits. Last season, I won USA Hockey Nationals as a part of the Philadelphia Little Flyers 16U AA team, getting a shutout in the Championship game. I love ice hockey and hope to continue to play it at the collegiate level. I began goaltending at the age of what most people would consider "late," and my Mom signed me up for a goaltending camp. I went to Barnabas Health Hockey House for the first time and walked in to meet the coach, a young and small female named Aerin Frankel, who was running the clinic. Back then, I had yet to learn who Aerin Frankel was, but she taught me new skills I had not learned before and helped me become better at skills I already knew. She gave me great advice and had a significant impact on my life. This "tiny 5 '5 goaltender" is about the same size as I am, brilliant, and an amazingly talented athlete with hopes to inspire the next generation.
I left that clinic and played my first full season of 14U hockey as a goaltender, utilizing the tools she had given me. I trained hard that year, working through the same struggles that most new goaltenders face, but I continued to persevere, remembering Aerin's advice. I followed Aerin's career and was inspired by Aerin's ability to succeed athletically and academically. That year, Aerin played for Northeastern and won Gold at the Olympics. Her hard work continued to inspire me to train harder and do well in school. At the end of the season, I again saw Aerin offering her free time to run camps for kids who, like me, want to improve their goaltending skills.
Trying to follow Aerin's footsteps, I am employed at my local ice rink, where I assist in coaching and educating beginner youth hockey players on the sport, having previously volunteered for years. I also served as a student coach on the bench for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights 12U Development Hockey Team. I want to inspire and encourage these young athletes both athletically and academically. I also want to show them there is additional enjoyment in giving back to your sport through being a good role model for youth athletes. Ultimately, I plan to study hard to become an orthodontist, be a supportive teammate at my school, and continue to learn how to develop as a youth hockey coach with aspirations to coach junior hockey.
