Hi, My name is Dorin Flynn. I first learned how to row when I was 10 years old but only have been on a team for about two years. Although I started training on a team when I was twelve, I only started racing when I was 13 due to the delay that covid put on racing in 2020. The team that I am currently rowing with is called Redwood Scullers. Rowing has always been a big part of my life, as my dad would always be training when I was little. I used to live in the Boston area of Massachusetts so it was common for me to watch my dad compete at the head of the Charles. Although we no longer live in Massachusetts, my dad is a local boathouse manager and spends many mornings coaching his senior team. The first time I rowed was in Craftsbury Vermont at a camp called Hosmer Point. At this camp, I was in the single for the entire time never straying into bigger boats. I still have a strong passion for the single but I have experience in all boat classes and have raced almost all of them. Although I am currently on a sculling team, I do enjoy being in sweep boats from time to time.
Although I do spend a lot of time rowing, and along with school I have very little time to do other things. I do have some other hobbies that I enjoy. For a large amount of time, I was playing the guitar. I had lessons every week for five and a half years. After playing guitar for such a long amount of time I did have to stop my lessons due to lack of time. I still occasionally will pick up my guitar and play. Another one of my preferred hobbies is hiking. I will frequently go on hikes on the weekends with my friends and I even chose hiking to be the topic of my year-long project in eighth grade. I have summited many of the local mountains in my area and I am always open to taking on another challenge or another mountain. One of my hobbies that I'm not so great at is cooking/baking. I enjoy cooking whenever I have some free time in the kitchen. Although I am far from a good cook I enjoy taking on the challenge, prepared for whatever results may come from it. Along with these hobbies, I really enjoy reading as well. One of my favorite books that I have read was called the Program by Suzzane Young. The story takes place in a futuristic world in the middle of a suicide epidemic. The government started funding what they believed to be the cure to the epidemic and it is called the program. The main character talks about what life is like during the epidemic and how she and her friends struggle with depression and the theory of the program potentially making it worse. My hobbies help to balance out my personal life with my rowing life and my school life which creates a good balance between the different parts of my life.
At home, I would generally say that I have a positive attitude which makes it much easier for the people who live with me to be happy. I am also pretty cooperative and willing to do a lot of things that are asked of me never with too much resistance. I also bring new ideas to my family and I always have relevant and good questions to keep the conversation going within my family. When I'm at practice or when I’m just with my team I have a reputation for being prepared whether that means knowing the lineups for the day ahead of time or grabbing a stroke coach early on so I'm not struggling later to get one I am almost always prepared. When I’m at practice I always have a desire to learn new things and take feedback from my coaches. Along with this, I have the drive to become stronger and I will do whatever it takes to become a better athlete. At the same time, I’m not scared to ask a coach for clarification if I don’t understand something or I need their advice on something. All of these attributes generally make me a good teammate and a good person in general.
