Being a student athlete can be both challenging and rewarding. It requires diligence, determination, and hard work, along with passion and drive. Being a competitive student athlete has made it nearly impossible to participate in normal high school activities. I have never been able to attend a high school football game, dance, or accept invitations to social gatherings. I always decline because of my practices 6 days a week, regattas on the weekend and my commitment to my team. As a former competitive volleyball player, I was looking for more of a challenge in a less dramatic sport. I certainly found it in rowing. I made the right decision to switch to a healthier team dynamic sport. I quickly learned that every member on our crew team, as well as in our boat, is important to the successes we have.
Personally, for me rowing is a way to channel my stress in a more positive outlet. I thrive on full days, but must work very hard in my classes to attain the grades I do. Additionally, crew requires just as much effort to keep my seat in the boat. I will be honest to admit, waking up at 5:30am to head to the boathouse for early morning practice sometimes makes me wonder why I choose to be a devoted crew member. With that said, I am.
