I want to row in a competitive setting in college that will not only challenge me athletically on the team but also academically in the classroom. After my first couple of weeks rowing in the winter of my freshman year, I fell in love with not only the sport but the community I was a part of. I strive to push myself to work hard academically as well as athletically every day, constantly looking for improvement. All pieces that I complete during practice and while racing evaluated by me and are looked at with ways to improve. If I gain seconds to my split, I look for a way to grow instead of quitting and welcome constructive feedback.
During my freshman year I consistently raced in the top boat for our novice team and earned a varsity letter by placing fifth in the freshman 8 category at the Midwest Scholastic Championships. This initial success motivated me each day to become the best rower that I can be. I spent the summer pushing myself to train for my upcoming sophomore year season. My summer work paid off and I eventually raced in the top varsity 8 boat for a 6k in the fall of sophomore year. I continued to accomplish many things and grow throughout the winter pushing myself to improve. This included a trip during spring break to the Nathan Benderson Park to increase the amount of experiance our team had in order to prepare for the upcoming spring season. This training paid off as our team placed high in the Midwest Scholastic championships either finishing in the A or B finals of each race.
Rowing has taught me many things such as discipline and respecting hard work. Without this discipline, I would never have been able to accomplish what I have. My team has also helped me improve by being some of my greatest advocates. I am looking for a program that has a great team environment that not only supports each other but strives to win on and off the water.
