I started rowing in fifth grade. At first this sport was just one of the many that I participated in during middle school. However soon I began to realize that rowing is the part for me and rowing brings out my best self. This sport has taught me to always push my hardest and to strive for the best. My whole life has been a series of “what is next”, whether it be in a sports capacity or school. I am excited for college as it will be the last “what next” for me academically. I want to row in college so that I can continue in my journey to discover myself in the sport.
Rowing has taught me discipline, determination, and the need to succeed. My coaches at RowAmerica Rye have been essential in my development as not just an athlete but as a person. This sport has taught me what it is like to push your hardest and give your all in a race or a test piece. Without rowing I never would have discovered what my maximum is personally and how I can push that ceiling higher. Rowing has taught me that you need determination in order to succeed in your goal and you need to put the work in.
I have always succeeded in academics, however rowing is the sport that I used as an example to try my absolute hardest in school. Before I began rowing I never really spent much time studying or striving for the best score on an exam, but soon I learned to try my best in everything in life, including schoolwork. With this mindset I was able to do extremely well academically in the beginning of my high school career. Rowing has taught me many important morals and shapes the person I am today. I learned that hard work is needed to achieve anything in life, the world isn’t going to hand anything to you on a silver platter. Determination is necessary in order to succeed.
