Hi! My name is Selina Kao, I am a part of the Class of 2025 at the Wheeler School in Providence Rhode Island. My dream in life is to become a pediatric cardiologist as I want to extend a helping hand to children in need. I was born with a condition called congenital hypothyroidism, and if I had not been diagnosed at only a few weeks old, I would not have been able to thrive the way I am now. This is the reason why I want to become a pediatric cardiologist to help other children with chronic illnesses to thrive and live out the best lives they can.
I have been rowing for about three years now and I have been swimming for at least ten. I am a team player and I try to face everything with a smile and positivity. It is in my belief that the hardest part of sports is not the physical discipline but the mental ones and that it is necessary to enter every challenge, every race, with good spirits and positive energy. I believe that my ability to smile through the struggle is what will put me aside from other candidates. I am also a big believer in teamwork. Even in an "individual sport" like swim, I believe that team bonding is one of the best things a team can do in order to garner support. I have realized that throughout the years of being on the Wheeler School swim team that the reason why we do so well in meets and at championships is not only because we are fast, but it is because we are always there for each other. We bond over the season, we talk to each other, we greet each other in the halls, and at the end of the day, this cumulates into our cheering, our screaming from the sidelines, urging our teammates to go faster, motivating them to take the last one and make it their fast one. The years in which we are the closest are the best and most memorable years. I believe that my ability to plan events plays a big part in this as I played a big part in planning this year's senior meet. Making the posters, organizing people to arrive early, and taking the time to set up is what made this year's senior meet so special and allowed us as a team to become closer. With my ability to plan and work things out, I believe that I can bring a sense of community to your college rowing or swim team and potentially make your team the best it can be through the bonds that are formed between team members.
Thank you so much for reading through my page and I hope you consider me as your next recruit!
