Hello! My name is Estelle Burugu, and I’m a student at The Hockaday School and a Coxswain at Dallas United Crew. I began my rowing journey over a year ago as an athlete in the boat, but after a hip injury in the fall, I transitioned into the coxswain seat. That transtion turned out to be a gift, I quickly discovered a deep love for leading from the 9th seat and helping my teammates grow. I currently cox women’s boats but am fully open to coxing men’s crews as well.
What I love most about coxing is getting to witness and help my rowers’ growth. There’s nothing like seeing a rower take your feedback and make a change that instantly shifts the feel of the boat. Even if it’s just a few strokes, when the form clicks, the rhythm sharpens and the crew moves as one, the feeling is unmatched. Those moments, when communication, trust, and timing align, are the most fulling. The rewarding part of being coxswain is seeing each small adjustment adding up over a season seeing that growth unfold both in my rowers and in myself over the course of a season is the most rewarding feeling.
What sets me apart from other coxswains is my combination of strong leadership, resilience, and unwavering devotion to my team. I lead with confidence and clarity, always staying calm under pressure and adapting quickly to changing situations on the water. My resilience allows me to push through challenges, whether it’s recovering from injury or balancing the intense demands of rowing alongside a rigorous academic schedule at Hockaday. Above all, my devotion to both the sport and my teammates drives me to continuously improve, support others, and foster a positive, motivated team environment. These qualities help me bring out the best in my crew and contribute meaningfully to every practice and race.
Beyond crew, I’m deeply involved in my school and community. I serve as Physics Team Secretary and a Hocka-Cares Rep, and I’m part of the Drill Team, Dance, African Student Union, and Black Student Union. I’m also a school tour guide and buddy, sit on the fundraising committee for The Girls Wellness Initiative, and work as a youth treasurer at my church. Academically, I’ve participated in the Wharton Global Investment Competition and attended the UTSW Basic Science Symposia. These experiences have taught me to manage my time with discipline, lead in many settings, and support the people around me.
I’m excited to find a college program that will challenge me to grow not only as a coxswain, but as a student and leader. I’m ready to bring my voice, drive, and dedication to a team that values excellence, resilience, and unity.
