Megan's 2017 Game...I am willing to work hard to get what I want. I am not a naturally gifted player and I started out in house league. I worked hard to improve my skills through soccer camps, soccer academies and working on things on my own outside of team practices. I moved up through Silver, then Gold then Metro. I currently play with a year older metro team, and have previously played on my school's senior and junior team. I have been playing soccer since I was 4, and have dedicated countless hours to improving my skill, speed and game sense. My strengths on the field are passing accuracy, shots from distance and reading the game. I am also very focused on my studies, I strive for A's, and currently have a GPA of 94%. My most recent accomplishment was to be permitted to play as a call up for our U16 Team in the BC Provincials last July. I previously played Center Defense or Center Mid but on the newer team I also play Attacking Mid as a shadow striker and as a Left Back . I find that Left Back gives more freedom to have more options, such as running the ball, in Center Mid I think you need to flow the ball through the field very quickly as the competing team does not give you much space or time. I am most proud of my ability to control the pace of a game as a Midfielder by either instigating an attack or by slowing down the play to buy my team time to regain shape and field position. I focus on the small things like positional awareness, scanning to ensure I know where the other players are and thinking ahead about if I should pass or run the ball should I get possession. I take as much pleasure is a great assist or steal as I do in scoring a goal. I know that soccer is a team sport and I don't need to be the star.
I actually learned quite a bit from helping to coach the U13 Gold team this last year as helping the less experienced players and having to slow down and really think about things I did, so I could explain them, helped me gain a better understanding of the soccer mechanics.
I also learned a lot playing on our Senior High School Team at the "AAA: level. For starters I wasn't a starter. That gave me a very different perspective and an appreciation for the players I have played with who may not have gotten as much play time as I do, I also learned that there are many strong players. I believe what sets me apart is my determination, focus and hard work. I'm not naturally gifted or talented, athletically or academically, I have to work hard to be better. The pay off is definitely of worth it!!!! I've had my share of obstacles and disappointments for sure but I've learned that perseverance can go a long way.
Soccer really is my happy place, there is no where besides the pitch that I feel as at home.
