I have always loved soccer, but I was not always a great player. And even though I have been playing club for several years, and I’m on the varsity team, for a long time I didn’t really feel like I was playing my best. It got me thinking, how can I change my status? How can I become a better asset to my teams? I started talking to my coaches more, asking them what I needed to do to get better. I listened to them, started working on the pointers they gave me, and I suddenly saw a difference in my attitude and my level of play.
My varsity coach saw my motivation to work harder, and he decided to try me out in a new position. I had always played wing, midfield, and striker but he decided to move me to outside back! I was terrified, but as the season went on, I had my best season ever. I quickly became a starter, and at the end of the season, I helped my varsity team win state. At the team banquet this past spring, my coach gave out some awards and he gave me the award for the most improved player. This lit a spark in me. Now I feel very comfortable in my position, and I am pushing myself to be the best player I can be.
As a player, I am always willing to listen to tips and pointers that a coach may have, and I am very open-minded and willing to do what it takes to help the team reach its goal. I have a good sense of the field. Even if I am playing with a new team, I know where my teammates are supposed to be so I can get them the ball easier. I am a good leader. If something isn’t right, I will help find a way to fix the problem. I also have a lot of determination, which helps me strive to be the best version of me on and off the field.
Athletically, I am always striving to get better. If a coach tells me to run five laps, I will push myself until the end. Academically, my grades have improved each year of high school. I am challenging myself this year by taking AP classes. I am always thinking about how I can improve and what I need to do to get into the right college to help me achieve my dreams.
