I have been playing soccer since I was 4 years old, but soccer really clicked for me in 2012 when my coach at the time, threw me in the net! It was then that I knew soccer would be my life and what would inspire me. There was no looking back!
Most players have no interest playing this position, who wants to have high velocity balls hurled at you, be charged at, and be where cleats are inches from your head?
For me, I welcome the challenge, I often feel like the hawk; solitary, lonely, waiting… which to onlookers may seem like I am doing nothing, watching as my teammates fight to keep the ball out of my domain. I like the illusion of looking like I am not paying attention, far removed from the action at the other end.
I am a very calm, patient and unflappable person. In my confined net space, I am always focused, analyzing, calculating, and studying the field. Being a keeper is full of conflict. It is reactive, introspective, humbling and filled with ups and downs. It is my absolute passion, it is where I am myself and free.
I am a dedicated and conscientious athlete. Coaches will say that I am an extremely hard worker, I am easy going and welcome the opportunity to learn and grow as a keeper, I don’t know everything and I enjoy perfecting my craft and challenging myself. I am an excellent team player, my teammates mean a lot to me, I am a caring person and I am mindful of what being part of a team means. I am thankful everyday to have this gift and to play this sport.
When I play, I am not only watching from afar, I am a fierce competitor and just when you think you’ve gotten past my net…I’ve ploughed through you, with what others have described as my cat like reflexes, out-smarting you, and the ball? Well, it is in my hands… hands you didn’t even realize were there!!
