Personal Statement

Dear Coaches,

My name is Annelie Leitner, I am from Austria and I am 15 years old. Due to my parents´ profession I live in Guatemala City, Guatemala, where I am about to complete my Freshman Year at the Instituto Austriaco Guatemalteco, Guatemala's most prestigious high school.

I have played soccer since I was five years old. At the age of seven I joined the U-9 of my first club, 1. FC Tamsweg in Austria. It was an all-boys' team and I remember that after the first training session, the coach immediately moved me to the U-11  (also only boys). I played my first two seasons with FC Tamsweg: At the age of seven, I was the only girl in a U-11 team and I was a starter in the line-up! This is also where I scored my first goals.

After two years my parents moved to Salzburg, Austria and I had to look for a new club. I was happy to be accepted by the prestigious club 1. SSK 1919. Again, I was the only girl in the team. In the three years I was there, the 1. SSK 1919 won the state championships for U-11 and U-12. Not only was I a starter, I also scored 34 goals, which made me the second best scorer of the entire team.

In 2008 my family moved to Guatemala City. I started playing for my school and after a few months I was given the chance to participate in a showcase training with Guatemala's reigning champion (UNIFUT/PARES) in the National Soccer Championship for women. I was accepted, but could not start playing in the national championship, because I had not turned 14 yet.

Soon after my 14th birthday my dream came true: I was allowed to play in the National Championship for Women. In my first season I played in 19 games. I was never substituted and I was the team captain on two occasions. In my first season I scored 21 goals, which made me the second best scorer in the entire national league.

The biggest highlight in my career was taking part in the ISF World Championship in Fortaleza, Brazil with Guatemala's National Team in April 2011. I scored 2 goals, one against the later world champion Germany. (Final score 1-1).

In September 2011 I will be part of Guatemala's National Team taking part in the CODICADER Soccer championship for Central America in El Salvador.

When it comes to soccer, the US-National Team is inspiring me. I am a big fan of Alex Morgan and it is my biggest dream to play soccer for a competitive college in the USA. My intended mayor is physical therapy, but this is just one option of many.

I am looking forward to hearing from you,

Annelie Leitner
