I am one of three sisters, the middle child in fact. Everyone tells me the middle child is complex. So, having to write this personal statement has me believing that it is true.
I have been raised to be a loving sister and friend, to welcome diversity and respect people’s opinions, to care about those around me, and to help those who can’t help themselves. I have also been raised to be fiercely loyal, to speak up against injustices, to fight for things that are worth fighting for, and to have passion for the things I choose to do in life. I am a mixture of all these things and in my mixed up, crazy teenage years, I have learned to manage all of these feelings and beliefs. I say this because it speaks to who I am as a person; and it also speaks to who I am as a player.
I believe for me to play at a higher level in a sport like soccer, the things that are already a part of me must continue to be present for me to be successful. I’m not afraid to communicate with my coaches and teammates because I believe that is the only way to build respect and loyalty. I’m not afraid to fail, because I know that if I play with passion, I am pursuing excellence and not perfection. I’m not afraid to fight for something, because when I do it means I am fighting for something that is not just about me; it’s about something bigger than me. This belief system helps me be a good teammate, a good communicator, respectful of the sport, yet tenaciously loyal and willing to fight for the win. I don’t believe a win is a win unless all these things are present.
