Hi! My name is Paige Tomer and I am a 17-year-old junior at Bainbridge Island High School.
I moved to Bainbridge Island from Pittsburgh, PA in the 6thgrade as my dad accepted a job in Seattle. There are many beautiful hikes and runs on the island, fun places to go with friends, and it is one short ferry ride away from vibrant Seattle.
On the island, I take full advantage of being surrounded by water. My friends and I go dock jumping, sometimes even in winter (like on my birthday which is in January!). I hang out in cafes, on beaches and docks and go over to Seattle for shopping and school events. In the summer, my friends and I kayak, paddle board and have campfires on our local beaches.
I play soccer year-round, but my participation in activities is not limited to or defined by soccer. I work year-round in a crepe shop in the downtown of Bainbridge Island (aka Winslow), which has taught me work ethic and multiple new skills (like making espresso!). I play tennis for the high school in the Spring and will hit with friends and family most of the year. Tennis has also been a wonderful experience for me and has led to many new bonds and friendships. I also volunteer for several island-based events (Girl’s Rock Math, Rotary Club Auction, tutoring younger students). Outside of my busy schedule, my favorite activities include: hanging out with my friends, reading, and sleeping.
In high school, I am in mostly Honors and AP classes and have a 3.99 (unweighted) GPA. My favorite classes this year include AP Statistics and AP U.S. Government. I am thinking of majoring in math in college. Math and history have consistently been my favorite subjects in high school.
On the soccer field, there are several traits that define my style of play. First, I am very good at anticipating the flow of the game. The second defining trait is that I have a high work rate – I am tenacious and don’t give up on plays. The last is that I don’t “panic”. These traits result in a style of play that is calm-and-cool with a very high pass rate (over 80%).
On the pitch, I have high expectations for me and my teammates. I am a vocal leader on the field, but do so in a way that makes the team stronger. My coach frequently puts me in charge of organizing plays throughout the game.
Since I was moved to center back, my club team has been among the league leaders in goals against. Coming into this year the team gave up 13 goals in 24 games – with one of those games being a 5-1 loss. This year we are in a more competitive league and the team welcomed two younger defensive players. This has resulted in more goals against but we are still second in the league in this statistic.
I enjoy learning new things and while I work well alone, I am also a strong academic and athletic team member. I am hoping to have the opportunity to play soccer in college as I think it will add a lot to my overall college experience.
