My name is Sofie Curran and I am a junior at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, CA. Swimming has been a core part of my life since I started competitively swimming at eight years old. When I was little, our backyard pool was my favorite playground, and I was always at my happiest just being in the water. That love intensified as I got older and joined my swim club, where I started in the youngest group and progressed my way to the senior group. I love to compete and be a part of a supportive team environment, as a senior level swimmer on my swim club or as a varsity swimmer in high school.
My years in swim have helped me develop a dedicated work ethic and recognize the importance of goal-setting, and along with it, patience to follow the path to meet those goals. Over the past 2 years during Covid, I struggled with nagging shoulder pain, and after focused physical therapy and creating an adjusted swim program with my coaches, I’ve been on a positive path to rehabbing my shoulder. I learned that overcoming the physical pain was just one aspect to my rehab. I had to reset and manage my overall performance expectations, including the timeframe to achieve my goals, which was hard for me to accept. I also had to rebuild my confidence and work on mental exercises to stay positive and keep on the path to reach my goals. For me, this mental challenge was far greater than the physical one, and I had to learn to pivot to a long term focus and be PATIENT. I’ve persevered and learned to stabilize my shoulder in the water, and proud to say I’m on solid footing to reach my goals. I couldn’t be more excited for where I am and can’t wait for spring competitions in mid-distance breaststroke, fly and IM! In the end, I’ve gained more perspective, trained smarter, and learned where to effectively put my efforts and mental focus.
Swimming has given me confidence and a sense of self-reliance, helping drive me forward in my academic career as well as in the pool. I am very interested in pursuing a career centered around economics, the environment and law. My goal is to reach a 4.0+ GPA by the end of my senior year in high school. Being a college athlete would give me the opportunity to continue to grow as a person and discover what I am truly capable of both as an athlete and a student. I fully believe that both the physical and mental challenges that swimming has prepared me for give me a solid foundation for college academics and competitive athletics.
