“Evelyn, we regret to inform you that you did not qualify for the swim team”. Those words were uttered to me following my high school swim tryouts freshman year. However, the coaching staff did not consider that I am a persuasive individual, who never gives up on a goal I’m pursuing -- Coach Johnson gave me an opportunity to swim that year, and the year following the same coach named me first alternate for the state relays. This year, I have qualified for state in the 50 and 100 freestyle and both of my relays. For the 2020-2021 season, I will be one of the senior captains of our team, and I am beyond excited to help to lead the team. I do not quit, I do not give up, and I always rise to my life challenges-sometimes I just need to be given a chance.
I am a self-driven and motivated individual-from teaching myself guitar, ukulele, piano, and art-my love is medicine. In college, I envision achieving large academic success by following a path to orthodontics. The idea of giving people the perfect smile has always appealed to me, even during my own braces phase. This is because of the difference it made in me. After my orthodontist removed my braces, I immediately knew I wanted increase other’s self esteem through perfecting teeth alignment as well.
Personally, swimming is not just a sport, it is a motivator for everyday life. Everyday is a new challenge on what I can do to improve myself. This is what I would bring to a collegiate swim team. I strongly believe in self accountability and setting goals, big and small. I do absolutely whatever it takes to reach my goals in and out of the pool.
