Personal Statement
Dear Coach,
After swim lessons as an infant and toddler, my formal journey as a competitive swimmer started at five years old when I joined my neighborhood’s summer swim team, the beginning of an eleven year run. At the end of my first season, I was honored to receive Swimmer of the Year award, given to one lucky swimmer for personal growth, motivation, and team spirit! I also explored a few other sports during grade school: soccer, gymnastics, cheer, dancing, track, skiing and basketball, and always found myself enjoying swimming the most. Over these years, I have developed my swimming technique in club swimming and HS swimming and feel very proud and dedicated to my sport! As a competitive swimmer, I have learned that what you put in during practice makes all the difference at competition. I have also learned to trust my coaches and have really enjoyed the bonds and friendships with my teammates.
Swimming has supported my academics and academics has supported my swimming. I continue to improve in important life skills: time management, discipline, focus, health, organization, faith, and team membership. I’m looking for a college that will challenge and develop me as a student, swimmer, and further shape me as a person. I’m thinking of studying business, since I’ve enjoyed business classes in HS more than anything.
In the meantime, my love for the sport and desire to help others learn how to swim prompted me to get a job as a swim instructor at a local health club, teaching kids the fundamentals and techniques of swimming in group and private lessons.
