Personal Statement

Hi!  My name is Derin Yerlikaya, and I am currently a high school Junior (class of 2024.) I love swimming more than anything else, and it has always been my dream to swim in college. I have a very strong desire to practice every day and compete at a very high level. This comes from within, and is the source of my determination and driven attitude. I cannot imagine my life without swimming. My favorite events range from the 50 freestyle all the way to the 7,5k open water.

Another area that separates myself from other athlete is the fact that I am very versatile in all four strokes. I can be placed in multiple events, strokes, and distances, depending on where the coaches need me. This gives my coaches the ability to place me where needed for the team  when creating their best relays.

I have seen how my hard work pays off time and time again. I always strive to do my best and give my 100 % in every practice and at every meet. It is this work ethic, focus, and dedication, that separates me from many of my competitors. When working with my coaches, I take the time to listen to their suggestions and practice these techniques until I can master them . The same holds true for my academics. I study hard and always apply the lessons learned in order to achieve high marks. I am currently enrolled in all honors classes and have received many academic awards to date.

My goal is to become a better swimmer. I'm looking for a university with benefits forwarding to that as well as good academics for my pleasing. What I think would make me a good candidate for university team is my will to do what it takes to get where I need to be and compassion for the sport. What makes me different is my ability to lead, my will to listen, and my overall love and compassion for this sport as well as my academic strengths.

I hope to go to a college that can help me to achieve my highest potential in swimming. I am a very driven, dedicated, and motivated athlete, who tries their best to achieve their goals and constantly improve.

I am confident, I am dependable, and I always have an uplifting team spirit. Thank you for taking the time to review my profile! Have a great day!

  • STANFORD INTERNATIONAL SWIM CAMPS
  • 8/01/16 to 8/22/18
  • In 2016, as a reward for my national titles during the season, my school sent me to America.I attended Nike swimming camp at Stanford University in the USA. I took 1 month advanced swimming training under the supervision of Stanford University head coach (Olympic champion and also the coach of the American national team) Greg Meehan. I met athletes from many countries who volunteer to swim and want to improve themselves. I learned about their countries. I actually saw how the American national team trains. Maya Dirado(olympic gold medalist), Simone Manuel (olympic gold medalist) and Lia Neal (olympic silver medalist) were training there with head coach Greg Meehan. I watched their training for a month.
