My name is Madeline McGee, I am currently a junior at Ionia High School. I have been swimming competitively since I was nine years old with a YMCA club team out of Grand Rapids, MI. I will say that my start with swimming began the summer after I was born. I have always loved being in the water. I am the most comfortable standing behind the starting blocks waiting for the whistle to blow. As I step up on the starting block, my mind is clear, and I am ready to compete, knowing that I have prepared myself well for the race ahead of me. It wasn't until I had some recent success with qualifying times, that I really began to dream of swimming in college while pursuing a degree in the medical field. I have always loved children, especially babies, which is why I want to be either a neonatologist, pediatric surgeon, pediatric physical therapist, or nurse.
Swimming has given me the opportunity to become more confident in myself, set goals, become mentally and physically tough, and create routines and discipline for myself to help me meet my goals. I am an A student that takes pride in my academics as much as I do my swimming. I have always pushed myself to take challenging classes in school, and do well in them. I have learned that it takes a great deal of dedication and commitment to have good grades while maintaining my training schedule for swimming. I have also learned through different coaches, mentors, and my parents, that proper nutrition is the foundation for success. My high school coach always says, "Garbage in, garbage out," meaning that if we fuel our bodies with junk food, we will have junk results in the water. This also means, if we put forth garbage effort during practice we will have garbage results. My club team motto is, "Live Well, Swim Fast." I try to live by this every day and live my life the best way possible with strong faith, work ethic, and healthy habits, knowing this will lead me to the results I desire both in water and on land.
I would be a good candidate for your team and school because I am goal-oriented, I like to have fun, create new friendships, and I am also a very hard worker. My teachers and coaches would describe me as a positive group member, incredibly humble, nurturing, and a quiet strength. I would much prefer the focus to be on my team or class group and our success, than on myself and my individual accomplishments or achievements. I hope you will consider me as an asset to your team. I look forward to hearing from you.
