When I was 8 years old my cousin invited me to swim with him on a recreational summer swim team for fun. On my very first day of practice I felt at home in the water and it gave me so much joy. I went every day of the week all summer long and swam in every meet they offered. My coach for that swim league was patient and taught me so many different aspects about being in the water, techniques and skills that would eventually put me to winning heats. She introduced me to a year long swim team that fall and I have been swimming ever since that summer of 2015.
Today, I am 15 years old and a Sophomore in high school. My same recreational summer coach, Dara, is now my high school coach and this is my first year swimming in high school. I also swim for the same year round coaches, Jeff and Leah Tunstall, and have been working very hard to increase my endurance and speed over the last several years. I feel what sets me apart from other swimmers is my intense work ethic, determination and will power to succeed in any event I swim in. My focus has gotten more clear over the last year that I want to stay dedicated to this sport and swim in college one day.
I set many goals for myself personally, academically and athletically. I feel that when I set goals I can progress more quickly because they are attainable but I also work very hard in school and in the pool.
One of my main qualities is that I am always punctual and very rarely have missed a practice in the last 3 years. I practice 5 days a week 3 hours a day with my Elite team and we are all very close and push one another to be our best in swim and in life.
My family is very supportive and give me a lot of encouragement to do well in life! My parents have been married almost 25 years and they are always there for me carrying me to practices, meets, school, and anything else I need. They have instilled hard work in me in everything I do and also to always be kind, well-mannered and honest. My dad always says "your actions have consequences" and I carry that saying in my head everywhere I go. I also have two older sisters. Kaitlin is 22 years old and graduated from college and works full time as a Business Development Manager for Inmar Intelligence. My other sister Laney is 19 years old and is in nursing school at Forsyth Technical Community College where she will graduate in May 2023. They are huge influences for me because they are so successful, caring and supportive of me in everything I do. I go to them for advice and they are always there for me when I need them. I am the only swimmer in the family so it is fun to do something different than they did growing up.
I hope that I will make a college swim team proud to have me on their team one day in the future. It is a goal that I work for daily. I am coachable, help in any way possible at the pool from putting in or taking out lane ropes to making sure the pool deck is clean before we leave. I am also a mentor and helper to our tiny swimmer program at our club pool and my summer league. I love teaching the kids a sport that has given me so much over the years. And to see their faces light up with they get across the pool for the first time is exciting!
In conclusion, I want to say that I appreciate you reviewing my profile and learning about why I love to swim and my dedication to the sport. My coaches will tell you that I am a fierce competitor, a hard worker and love being able to contribute to the TEAM!
Best regards,
Mallory Cave
