As a freshman swimming on the varsity swim team of a brand-new school with only freshman, one sophomore, and two juniors I learned what it means to be a leader and a supportive teammate. With only four girls and four boys, we had to swim all relays along with our individual events. I feel this experience helped me grow the most as a student-athlete. As I learned to juggle academics, other commitments, and swim, I learned the value of teamwork, commitment, sacrifice, and leadership, and knew I did not want to let my team down in any way. That experience led me to grow as a person and to focus my own efforts on becoming a better student and athlete. I now know that I can perform the same effective way at the college level.
As a child, my father tried to commit suicide and that taught me to value life and never give up. My goals and never give up attitude both have influenced my life in my swimming because it helped me be the only female that made it to regionals in an individual event from my school. This was when I realized because of everything I have been through and struggle with (my father, dyslexia, and scoliosis) I am stronger than I realize. I also have a zest for life and my desire to never give up developed into a do not let anyone quit attitude. This showed me I am a great leader that leads by example and keeps the team spirit high. I am looking for a program that will be a good fit for me athletically and more importantly academically. I believe I have the talent to compete at the college level, with a strong character, work ethic, and leadership skills and would like to make an immediate impact in a college program.
