Personal Statement

My name is Rebecca Marie Franklin.  I am currently in my senior year at the
American School of Doha.  I moved to Doha, Qatar during the summer of
2004.  It has been a unique experience being an expat kid and growing up
overseas.  I have had many wonderful opportunities to travel and experience a
variety of cultures.  Living as an expat has provided me a global perspective that
has heightened my appreciation for daily interaction with the diverse population
of Qatar.

I started playing tennis in Qatar when I was 9 years old, and competing in
tournaments at age 12.  By age 14, I was ranked number one in the eighteen-
year-old division.  In 2013, I decided to play singles and doubles in the women’s
bracket and have achieved the number four ranking in singles and have gone
undefeated with my current doubles partner.  In addition to playing outside of
school, I have played on The American School of Doha’s Varsity team since 8th
grade and have medaled either gold or silver each year during conference play.

I continue to work and improve my game and techniques.  However, this has
proven to be difficult without a coach.  I have pursued instruction through
various local and visiting expatriate instructors to build on the basics of
tennis.  Currently, I’m on the court a minimum of six days a week.

In addition, my summers are spent in the United States attending camps and
tournaments.  Over the past five years, I have received instruction from coaches
associated with Texas A&M University’s Tennis Camps and IMG’s Bollettieri
Tennis Program.  This past summer, I participated in USTA tournaments in Texas,
Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama.  My desire would be to play in
tournaments year round and build my ranking; however, that is not possible at
this time due to my location and tournament availability.

My ultimate goal is to play college tennis, while also pursuing a degree.  I feel
academics and discipline are key elements to success.  I know I have not
reached my true potential and I desire to keep pushing and growing to see how
far I travel in the game of tennis.
