I have always loved the thrill of competition. My love for running really began when I was in elementary school as I was one of the first kids in my school’s new running club. My background in martial arts gave me the speed and endurance I needed to thrive in the club. I am a black belt, national champion, and Junior Olympian in Shotokan Karate, so I have learned to have discipline and patience with myself and other people.
I first became interested in running, and hurdling especially, when I was in seventh grade. Trying out for hurdles and winning my races in P.E. class really inspired me to continue my passion for running in high school. And while running in high school, I have discovered how passionate I am about running and hurdling. Now, I want to continue running and hurdling in college.
I have also learned, through karate and running, that I thrive in social environments because I enjoy having teammates and becoming close with them. Getting to where I am now in track and field has not been easy; every year at my high school we have had new coaches, and I did not always “click” with them. This is why I have found so much value in my relationships with my teammates, they have been the most consistent part of my track and field training. Running and hurdling are big parts of my life and my personality; however, I also view my academics as a priority because I want to challenge myself in order to succeed in life after school.
