My name is Erica Henrietta McCoy. I was born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as my father's job required it. I am half American and half Laotian, an ethnicity from a small country in Asia, not well known. Living in Saudi Arabia has given me limited options and sources of entertainment and extracurricular activities outside of my school, so my primary focus has been my education and the activities in school I have been able to participate in. I started track when I was in 7th grade, but in 8th grade, I decided focus on my studies. When 9th grade came along, I decided to try out track again, and see if I could juggle that, my studies, my piano practices, my clubs and socializing with my friends and family at the same time. In the end, my grades stayed the same, and I was able to fulfill an opportunity to do something that I sincerely love and am, in my opinion, truly good at. Of course, this piece of my own opinion sounds pretentious, but this is truly something I try my very best at, and I think this is what makes me exceptional at this, and a good candidate for this scholarship.
In the past two years, I have broken 8 records, including my own. In my opinion, I could potentially be a good candidate for an athletic scholarship because I am diligent. I set myself to succeed at something and I do what is required and beyond to achieve my goal. I am not one to shy away from the work for something I love. When I feel that I need to work harder, train more, get better, I do it in my own time. I am also a team player, although track is mostly considered an individual sport. I love to watch my teammates perform in their events, and I support them on the sidelines and meet them at the finish line at the end.
I know getting the opportunity to train at college level will enhance my athletic abilities and push me beyond what I am used to. Under the guidance of college coaches I know that I could achieve my dreams of being great.
